Most people book the $99 and nothing else. That is the right call for most homes and we will say so out loud.

What the $99 actually buys

Why the price is on the website at all

Most companies in this trade will not publish a number, and the reason is not that the work varies too much to quote. It is that a price given at your door, after your dryer is already pulled out and your afternoon is committed, is a far stronger position than a price given over the phone.

We would rather lose the call than run that play. If $99 is more than you want to spend, you have learned that for free rather than after somebody is parked in your driveway.

The lint trap housing is the one people skip, and it is the one that costs them

We push this add-on harder than the other one, and here is the honest reason why.

Picture the slot your lint screen drops into. That slot is simply the opening of a chamber that runs down inside the machine, and anything too fine for the mesh, along with whatever brushes off the screen as you slide it out, falls into that chamber and stays put. It has no drain, no service interval, and almost nobody realizes it is there.

So it accumulates. Five years, ten, twenty. And because that cavity sits on the intake side of the whole system, it is strangling the airflow before any of it even reaches the duct you have just paid somebody to clear.

We have taken apart dryers where nobody had ever opened that cavity, and what running that hot for that many years had done to them cost more to put right than the machine was worth.

This is observed rather than pitched. Element, thermostat, blower wheel, plus the labour involved in reaching any of them, mounts up quickly on a unit already a decade old. At that point the repair tech advises against fixing it, and the replacement machine proceeds to do the same thing on the same never-opened housing.

How we actually clean it

That varies by model. Plenty of dryers let the housing come apart, so we take it apart, clean it out properly and reassemble it. Others route their exhaust differently and simply cannot be opened that way.

On those we run an air rod that drives the compacted lint out of the cavity while a vacuum box sits on the opposite side collecting it, so the material is captured rather than pushed elsewhere in the machine or into the room. The cavity ends up clear either way, which is the objective.

Ninety-eight dollars today, weighed against eight hundred to fifteen hundred for a new machine, is not a decision that needs much thought. If your dryer has more than five years on it and that housing has never been opened, do this one.

Do it if the machine has five or more years on it, if nobody has ever opened the housing, if you have pets, or if laundry runs most days in your house. Leave it if the dryer is close to new, and put the ninety-eight toward next time instead.

Should you get the hose upgrade?

That short flexible section joining the back of the machine to the wall duct is the transition hose. The ribbed foil type fails two ways: it folds flat under pressure from the appliance, and each corrugation gives lint somewhere to lodge. Rigid transition duct has neither weakness.

In Mesa this shows up two ways. In the older homes it is frequently the original hose from the seventies, brittle and half collapsed on its own. In the newer builds out east the hose is fine but the laundry closet is tight enough that closing the doors folds it nearly shut.

The code also leans this way: dryer exhaust ducts are meant to be smooth-walled rigid metal, with the flexible transition piece kept short rather than doing the work.

Worth it if you have foil flex, or the dryer sits tight to the wall.

How often to budget for it

Every 10 months for a normal household. That is the schedule, not a suggestion.

Using a slow dryer as your cue means you are not approaching due, you passed it about a year back. Slowness is not the starting signal. It is what shows up after months of restricted airflow have already been working on the machine.

And if you are in one of the older parts of town where it has never been done, you are not a year overdue, you are decades overdue.

At $99 every other year this is among the cheaper pieces of home maintenance you own, and it protects a machine that costs eight hundred to fifteen hundred dollars to replace.
