Mesa splits cleanly on this
Most cities are mixed. Mesa is unusually clear-cut, and knowing which side you are on saves you a phone call.
West and central Mesa is mostly single story from the fifties through the seventies. Those homes run the duct up about eight feet inside the wall and out the exterior wall nearest the dryer. No roof involved, short run, easy job.
East Mesa is a different city. Las Sendas, Mountain Bridge, Red Mountain Ranch, Augusta Ranch, Superstition Springs, Eastmark, built from the nineties onward and heavy on two-story plans with upstairs laundry. Once the laundry moved to the second floor the vent had nowhere sensible to go but up and out the roof.
So if you are east of about Greenfield with a second story, this page is about you. If you are in the older part of town, you probably have the easy version.
The code math, and why it matters to you
This is the part most homeowners have never been told, and it explains a great deal about why these runs struggle.
The International Residential Code caps a dryer exhaust run at 35 feet of equivalent length. Every 90-degree elbow deducts 5 feet from that allowance, every 45 deducts 2.5. Two 90s leaves an effective 25 feet. Three leaves 20.
A typical east Mesa roof run is 25 to 35 feet of actual pipe with two or three elbows in it. Run that arithmetic and many of these are at or past the allowance as originally built.
Nobody cheated and nothing is defective. Manufacturers and code officials both allow for it. But it means your run has close to zero margin, and a quarter inch of lint on the walls of a duct already at the limit is the difference between a dryer that works and one that does not.

Why roof runs clog faster
Length
More duct means more interior surface for lint to catch on. A thirty-foot run has roughly four times the surface of an eight-foot one.
Elbows
Airflow decelerates through every bend, and decelerating air releases the lint it was carrying. Each bend turns into a deposit site, and the moment material starts sitting there the passage narrows, which slows the air further, which deposits more.
Gravity
The factor nobody considers. Lint in a horizontal duct simply settles wherever it stops. Lint in a vertical run that fails to clear the top comes straight back down and builds up at the base, at the first bend, or directly behind the appliance.
Why some companies avoid this work
Because it is more effort and more exposure, while the straightforward money sits in single-story side-wall vents reachable from the ground. Roof work means hauling a ladder, climbing two stories, and crossing concrete tile in desert heat without breaking anything.
Before you book anyone for a two-story Mesa home, ask one question: is roof access included in that price?
How we clean a roof-terminated vent
- Check the cap first. From the roof, before anything else. Nest, flapper stuck open or seized, cracked hood, or a screen a previous owner installed with good intentions.
- Work the cap with the dryer running. The machine stays running while we are up there, so the air it is pushing carries the agitated lint straight out of the termination instead of letting it fall back down the run.
- Then work it from the dryer end. Machine unplugged and pulled back, brush fed up into the run, and everything it frees brought down and vacuumed up out of the wall.
- Reconnect, test, show you. The pile out of a thirty-foot run is usually worth seeing.
About walking your roof
Enough years on tile roofs means knowing how to move across one and which points carry weight, so nothing breaks underfoot. Concrete tile is not forgiving about that, and a cracked piece becomes water damage the first time the monsoon delivers properly.
When a roof cannot be walked safely, we leave it alone. Too steep, tile already broken, heat damage, any of it. Then the run gets cleaned from inside only and you are told straight out that is how it was done. Risking your roof to shave time off our day is not a trade we are prepared to make.
Worth fixing while we are up there
- A flapper rusted or lint-jammed open, an open invitation to birds
- A missing or cracked hood letting rain into the duct
- No bird guard on an otherwise sound cap
- A cap screened over by a previous owner, which the code prohibits because lint clogs screens fast
- A cap never properly sealed to the roof

Do you charge extra for roof dryer vents in Mesa?

Will you walk on my tile roof?
Yes, and we know where to step. Concrete tile cracks if weight goes in the wrong place, so we work off the structural points. If a roof is genuinely unsafe to walk, because of pitch, heat damage or existing broken tile, we will say so and work the run from inside rather than gamble with your roof to save ourselves time.
What about the older flat roofs in west Mesa?
Usually a non-issue, because those homes are nearly all single story with side-wall terminations. Where there is a roof vent the access is straightforward. The roof work in Mesa is concentrated east of about Greenfield.
